Jean waited with Trevor by the truck. She was staring at the ground, worried about Dr. Bischoff. The mercenaries fanned out, none of them saying a word as they waited for Rob and the others to finish inspecting the cave. Yellowstone waited by the ledge, keeping his M60 pointed in case any surprises should emerge. As he stood guard, he watched as Stroud initiated a quick climb down into the crevice. The scar-faced mercenary reached the bottom and inspected the glass containers in the soil.

“What do you see?” Yellowstone called down to him. Stroud didn’t answer right away. He nudged a glass tube with his boot, noticing dry blood from whatever sick experiment was inside of it.

“Watch out,” Trevor warned her. Jean looked down and saw the six-inch long scorpion approaching her foot. She kicked it away, watching it flail as it rolled into the jungle.

Muddler stood close by the truck, watching the trees. As before, there was hardly a sound coming from the jungle. It was as though it had been stripped of all life. Jean noticed it too. While working as a hostage, she hardly spent any quality time outside. But she recalled how the jungle was before the Red Cobras took over. It was vibrant, with birds, lizards, mammals, and monkeys seen at every turn. Now, there was nothing.

“What the hell was in here?” Stroud interrupted the silence. He was climbing up the side of the crevice after picking something off the ground. Jean approached, realizing he was holding the base of a test tube.

“It’s the smaller version of the artificial womb. This one in particular was for nurturing eggs,” she answered. Stroud noticed the shakiness in her voice. There was a realization in her facial expression. Trevor hobbled out of the truck, leaning on his crutch as he joined her.

Jean took the container from Stroud and examined it. The label was still inscribed on the metal base. Trial 3-2. Inside were decomposing fragments of what had been the egg sack inside of it. The tube was intact, save for a single hole in the side.

“No…” she muttered. “It can’t be alive…”

“We ran the tests,” Trevor said. His voice sounded as though he was trying to convince himself other than anyone else. “It was flatlined.”

“How many times did you check?” Jean asked.

“Just once. Isagana got angry and hauled it away before I could do anything else.”

“What?” Stroud asked, his gaze narrowing.

“What was in that? What did Isagana make you create?” Muddler asked. Jean couldn’t answer. She was struggling with comprehending the possibility. She and Trevor shared a horrified stare, before both noticing the local species of scorpion reemerging from the tree line.
